Better Cotton Initiative

The Better Cotton Initiative exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future. BCI aims to transform cotton production worldwide by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity.

To achieve this mission, BCI works with a diverse range of stakeholders across the cotton supply chain to promote measurable and continuing improvements for the environment, farming communities and the economies of cotton-producing areas.

Climate change is causing a multitude of environmental problems around the globe and agriculture is particularly affected. Over half of India's agriculture is rain-fed which can present many problems as precipitation patterns change with the climate. Practices must be adapted to meet new challenges. Hence the Deshpande Foundation is working to promote sustainable agriculture in all of its Sandboxes. Since May 2016 the Nalgonda Sandbox has been supporting farmers in the area through a variety of initiatives.

Our Four Specific aims

Improve livelihoods and economic development in cotton producing areas

Improve commitment to and flow of Better Cotton throughout supply chain

Ensure the credibility and sustainability of the Better Cotton Initiative

We do this by

Implementing integrated pest management practices such as border and intercropping in cotton, red gram, green gram, okra, white jowar, sunflower and soybean cultivation, and distributing seeds to over 1,000 farmers
